Tuesday, 7 August 2007

FE Report
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Mir Nasir Hossain urged the government Monday to declare the money spent on relief activities for the flood affected people as tax-free.
Addressing a press conference at the FBCCI conference room he said: "If the government announces that the money deposited to the government fund and spent on other relief activities as non-taxable then the affluent people will be encouraged to come forward in helping the flood victims."
The FBCCI president urged the country's business community to stand beside the large number of victims affected by the flood.
"We are urging the business community to take their own initiative to help the flood affected people besides joining our relief fund," FBCCI president added.
However, the FBCCI has taken elaborate preparations for distributing relief materials to the flood affected people.
Currently, some 38 districts had been severely affected by flood and 120 men had so far died of flood.
FBCCI president told the reporters that they will distribute relief materials in all affected districts in phases in collaboration with respective district chamber bodies and local business associations.
"Our team will work along with district chamber organisations and other associations and we will distribute relief materials under the supervision of district administrations," FBCCI Chief added.
The first FBCCI relief team led by its president Mir Nasir Hossain will start in Sirajganj today (Tuesday).
Some members of the team will later participate in relief distribution activities in Gaibandha, Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat districts.
FBCCI's another team to be led by its president will distribute relief materials to the flood victims in Manikganj, Faridpur, Magura, Rajbari, Madaripur, and Shariatpur.
Another team to be led by its first vice president Mohammed Ali will distribute relief materials in Narayanganj, Munshiganj, and Narsingdhi districts.
A team led by FBCCI vice president Dewan Sultan Ahmed will join relief distribution activities in Tangail, Jamalpur, Netrokona and Kishoreganj district.
FBCCI president said that the government should take detailed and effective rehabilitation programme to compensate flood losses.
He observed that the country's present growth might be seriously hampered if proper rehabilitation programme is not taken.
FBCCI president said the government should ensure adequate supply of seeds and fertiliser and other agricultural inputs to the growers.
"Supply of quality seed should be ensured. It might be imported and distributed to the farmers in the flood affected areas," he observed.
He said the period of agricultural loans repayment should be extended and fresh loans should be disbursed in the flood-affected areas to continue next harvest uninterruptedly.
