Declaring Jan 1 as 'Character Building Movement Day' stressed

As society is plagued with a moral rot, speakers at a function Tuesday stressed the need for declaring January 1 as a 'Character Building Movement Day' for awakening people to values of life, reports UNB.
Speaking as chief guest at the meet at the National Press Club, renowned economist and TIB Chairman Muzaffar Ahmed said a practice of character building should be initiated among parents and children, in primary education and at grassroots levels.
"A pledge should be taken to participate in the character-building movement to free the nation from individual, social, political and economic degradation," said the country chief of the international anti-graft watchdog.
Founder chairman of Dhaka University Theology Department Kazi Nurul Islam presided over the function, organised by Wajachok Ashram Bangladesh, a secular and service-oriented organisation.
Bangladesh Press Council Chairman Justice Kazi Abadul Haque told the meet that people become characterless through indulging in corruption as they are running after money "in the name of globalisation".
Columnist Syed Abul Moksud noted that gist advice of the four main religions existing in Bangladesh is to live with a pledge of maintaining moral character.
Ashram Principal Sri Jugal Brahmancharya and Dhaka University Professor Paresh Chandra Mandol, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
