Deep Sea port at Akram point demanded

Sunday, 26 July 2009

KHULNA, July 25 (BSS): Leaders and activists of Khulna Nagorik Samaj Saturday formed a human chain at city's Picture Palace crossing to press home their demand for setting up of a deep sea port at Akram Point.
The speakers said that the depth of water at Akram Point was much more than that of Sonadia which was earlier declared as the site of country's Deep Sea Port.
According to expert adequate anchorage facilities and strip of sandy land rising out of river bed would not be found in the next hundred years at that site and risks of colossal damages from natural disasters are less due to proximity of the Sunderbans, one of the world's largest mangrove forests.
The speakers also said that the government should take decision on the basis of opinions of the international port experts.
Chaired by Advocate Firoz Ahmed the programme was addressed by Prof. Mazharul Hannan, Advocate Abdullah Hossain Bachchu, Syed Mostahed Ali, Zahid Hossain, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, Momtaz Begum Bijli and Prof Sheikh Sadi Bhuiyan.
