Loan info posting from bank branches
Defaulter data uploading change not targeting polls
BB says to demystify scepticism
FE REPORT | Thursday, 12 October 2023
A latest change in updating defaulter data in the Central Information Bureau (CIB) with rapid information from bank branches has no relations with the upcoming national elections, says the central bank.
The Bangladesh Bank Wednesday came up with this statement to demystify doubts being aired about motives of the change on information about loan defaulters.
Defaults in repayment of loans or bills disqualify aspirant candidates from contesting polls.
The clarification was given at a press conference on the day in the face of media reports which said CIB data now can be changed at the branch level of banks, which usually head offices of the banks had done so far.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Mezbaul Haque said the new procedure would make ways for updating CIB data "faster and easier".
He said in the past each bank was given four passwords through which the officials at the head offices were updating CIB data and that was taking huge time.
"But now the banks were given an increased number of passwords to access the CIB database with which information will be uploaded from the branch level and need to be re-approved by another higher-level official before finally changing the info in the database," he told reporters.
The new system of updating CIB data was introduced on September 17 this year-incidentally at a time when flurries of talk are on stream regarding the general election amid political standoff between ruling and opposition quarters.
