Defence lawyers meet Kamaruzzaman

Thursday, 6 November 2014

The defence lawyers met condemned war crimes convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman inside the Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday morning. Earlier, Kamaruzzaman, the senior assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was taken to Dhaka Central Jail from Kashimpur central jail in Gazipur district on Tuesday afternoon. Kamaruzzaman’s family met him at the Dhaka Central jail on Wednesday morning and stayed with him at the prison for 30 minutes. On Monday, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence against the Jamaat leader for his 1971 war crimes. The apex court’s rejection of Kamaruzzaman’s appeal means that he will now be hanged within months, if the case is not reviewed again or he is granted clemency by the President. On May 10, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 awarded capital punishment to Kamaruzzaman for crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971, according to private TV channels.
