Defence submission for discharging case today

Sunday, 23 March 2008

The pending defence submission seeking discharge of the barge-mounted power-plant case against detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may take place today (Sunday) in the special court at the high-security parliament complex.
The hearing hinges on ailing Hasina's appearance in the court, Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Syed Shameem Ahsan Habib told UNB Saturday night.
Earlier on March 17, Judge M Firoz Alam had to defer the hearing further to March 23, as the prosecution could not produce the Awami League president in the court on account of her illness.
The court also had ordered the jail authorities to submit a detailed report on Haisna's health and treatment at Square Hospital by today (March 23). The court, following defence petition, passed the order.
On March 11, Hasina was transferred from the makeshift sub-jail to the Square Hospital for treatment without taking permission from the court.
