Delhi seeks permission for rubber thread export via Akhaura port

Sunday, 25 June 2023

FE REPORT
Delhi has formally requested Dhaka to include Indian rubber thread in the list of import items permitted through the Agartala-Akhaura land port, according to sources.
The Indian Embassy in Bangladesh has recently urged the Bangladesh commerce ministry to include the item in the list for import via the land port, aiming to facilitate rubber thread exports by Indian traders.
Rubber thread refers to a delicate square or round strand of rubber primarily used for elastic and elasticised thread and fabrics. Currently, it is not included in the Bangladeshi import list for the port.
Bangladesh heavily relies on imports of rubber thread, with major sources including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and India.
In light of this, a desk official at the commerce ministry said, "We are working on it which has been requested by the Indian Embassy in Dhaka."
However, the official was unable to provide specific import data regarding rubber thread from the neighbouring country.
