Bank swindler Prashanta Kumar Halder would be sent to Bangladesh after completion of the necessary legal process, both Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami said on Tuesday.
PK Halder, the former managing director of NRB Global Bank, has been on the run since 2019 to escape from facing charges of money laundering.
He was arrested in the Indian state of West Bengal this week by the Indian Directorate of Enforcement, which investigates the cases related with money laundering and violation of foreign-exchange laws, among others.
"We've discussed the issue of PK Halder. They arrested Mr Halder on the basis of specific information - provided by the ACC," the foreign secretary told newsmen after his meeting with the Indian envoy.
"They have certain legal procedure, and the matter will be processed through the procedure."
"They've said they will provide total cooperation to us when they will complete their legal process."
After completing the process they would cater to our requests, and they assured us of the highest cooperation (in this regard), Mr Masud added.
Talking to the newsmen after his meeting with the foreign secretary in the foreign ministry, the Indian envoy said Mr Halder was arrested on the basis of information provided by the Bangladeshi counterpart of the Indian agency concerned.
"We have all the requisite cooperation to deal with the criminal elements of both sides. There is a legal process that will be followed. And then it will happen," Mr Doraiswami replied when asked about Mr Halder's handing over to Dhaka.
Referring to the warm friendly ties with Bangladesh, he said mutual cooperation to prevent cross-border crimes is a common phenomenon for both the countries.
The envoy added that he met the foreign secretary to extend invitation to the foreign minister to join the JCC meeting between the two countries, which will be held on May 30 in Delhi.
