Delwar accuses govt of conspiring to put stooges in power

Tuesday, 22 July 2008

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain Monday demanded the long-awaited parliamentary polls to be held in October, before the planned upazila elections, after lifting the state of emergency fully, reports UNB.

He also alleged politicians have been thrown behind bars as part of the government's "conspiracy to put its own people in power".

Delwar Hossain was briefing journalists after a two-hour joint meeting of BNP's all front organisations at his NAM residence in the evening.

He demanded immediate release of detained ex-PM and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman.

Delwar said the political parties would have no objection if the politicians' trial is conducted under the democratic laws of the land as he observed this government cannot conduct trial of the politicians under emergency rules.

About the Election Commission's delimitation of the parliamentary seats, he said it is also a part of the government's "conspiracy to bring a group of handpicked persons in power".

"Only an elected government can take initiative for the demarcation of the parliamentary seats," he contended.

The outspoken BNP helmsman was critical of the government for banning trade unions, saying that this move is another step against the freedom of expression.

BNP sources said Monday's meeting discussed party's future course of action to ensure release of all political detainees, including Khaleda Zia, and tasks ahead of the elections.
