Tuesday, 2 October 2007

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain Monday called for lifting of the state of emergency and the ban on politics.
Talking to the reporters at his NAM apartment, he also welcomed the High Court (HC) verdict granting bail to Khaleda Zia Sunday, saying "people of the country have got justice, and we hope she will be released on bail soon."
Delwar again demanded the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina to ease the "path towards democracy and election, " reports UNB.
Replying to a question, he said, despite repeated appeals, the authorities did not allow them to meet the detained BNP chairperson.
The BNP leader also alleged that the authorities are not giving them permission to hold any programme at hotel or other places in accordance with the government-announced guidelines.
BNP central office at Naya Paltan still remained closed despite lifting some restrictions on indoor political activities, he said.
However, Delwar said, BNP leaders and workers from across the country are meeting him at his residence, and expressing their support to Khaleda Zia's leadership.
In reply to a question, the BNP secretary general said, in such adverse situation those who want to come with open mind came and met him, while many leaders could not meet him out of fear.
He said, BNP is still waiting to see the Election Commission's response to their letter.
On Dr Kamal - B Chowdhury's meeting, Delwar said, it is to be seen how far the people will accept their leadership.
