Delwar demands Khaleda release by Jun 30

Thursday, 26 June 2008

BNP secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain Wednesday demanded release of Khaleda Zia from pre-trial detention by June 30, a party insider said.

MA Malek, president of Jatiyotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Songstha (Jasas), quoted Delwar as saying that the leader also repeated his demand for release of Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko for overseas treatment.

"She is being kept in jail on false charges. We demand her unconditional release," Delwar was quoted as saying by Malek to the UNB.

Delwar made the statement at a view-exchange meeting with Dhaka city unit representatives of Jasas at his NAM apartment.

Malek said that the secretary general called upon the BNP leaders and activists not to be part of the local body elections slated for August 4.

Delwar said the interim government is out to hold the local body polls beyond their mandate as part of "an ill-designed plan to hang on to power for long".

Separately, Zia Porishod at a news briefing in the city's Photo Journalist Association demanded judicial probe into the alleged torture on Tarique.

The porishod leaders also demanded that the government make the judicial probe report public and bring the responsible to book.

Speaking to reporters Zia Porishod chairman Kabir Murad said they wanted that the government hold national polls by October 30.
