Delwar demands lifting of emergency, terms Bhuiyan's meeting illegal

Sunday, 16 September 2007

BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain said the state of emergency should be lifted for restoration of political and democratic rights, reports UNB.
Responding to the Chief Adviser's remarks that the state of emergency will continue for some more days, Delwar told reporters that the Chief Adviser perhaps made the remark out of his own outlook.
"We hope our thinking will be consistent with the government's to maintain political and democratic rights," he told reporters at his NAM house in the city Saturday afternoon.
Delwar termed illegitimate the meeting of Mannan Bhuiyan at a Gulshan hotel, questioning: "Who is he of BNP? He cannot call any meeting in the name of BNP under the party constitution."
About Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah's claim that he is the chief coordinator of BNP, Delwar said there is no official post of "chief coordinator" in BNP. But, he said, one can work as coordinator on behalf of BNP.
Asked about LDP chairman Badruddoza Chowdhury's return to BNP, the newly appointed secretary general said he is not aware of it as party's secretary general. He has only seen it in newspapers. " If he wants to return to BNP, he will have to formally inform the chairperson or secretary general of his intention," he added.
Delwar said if one is expelled from BNP, the chairperson gets it approved by the standing-committee meeting. In case the standing committee meeting could not be summoned, the chairperson by dint of her constitutional powers can alone expel or reject expulsion of any leader of the party.
BNP leaders and workers from Bhola, Madaripur and Keraniganj greeted Delwar with bouquets on his becoming party's new secretary general.
