Delwar refutes adviser's claim

BNP Secretary General Khandakar Delwar Hossain claimed Tuesday that he had had no discussion with the government on dialogue and release of Khaleda Zia, reports UNB.
"BNP chairperson is in jail. I'm the party's secretary general. I had no discussion with the government nor the process on dialogue is on. There was an either any talks with him on release of Khaleda Zia," he told reporters when his attention was drawn to the statement of Communications Adviser Golam Qader.
Assigned as spokesman on political affairs of the government Adviser Qader informed newsmen Monday that contacts with BNP continued for dialogue and the process was well advanced on release of Khaleda Zia.
"There was no discussion with me," Mr Delwar said adding, "I've no idea if the government is in talks with its orchestrated BNP."
He talked to newsmen at his residence before holding a meeting with former MPs of the party to exchange views with them.
Mr Delwar referred to the repeated feelers of the government that the release of Khaleda Zia was under active consideration. He questioned how much time the government would take to complete the process of consideration. Who knows if their process would ever complete, he said.
But the demand for release of Khaleda had now assumed the demand of the masses and she should be set free immediately and her ailing eldest son Tarique Rahman be sent abroad for treatment, he said.
Tarique, also senior joint secretary general of BNP, is undergoing trial in two extortion and corruption cases. He faces at least a dozen criminal cases.
Mr Delwar urged the government to open the BNP central office in the city's Purana Paltan area for them. It has been kept under lock and key illegally. The key should be handed over to him immediately. "I do not want the key returned through compromise behind the scene," he mentioned.
