Delwar seeks broader unity in four-party alliance

Saturday, 21 June 2008

BNP Secretary General Khondoker Delwar Hossain Friday called upon the activists of the four-party alliance to stand united to overcome future challenges on the political front, reports UNB.

As the alliance is facing multiple political challenges amid emergency rule in the run up to the national polls, Khondoker Delwar said they needed stronger bonding among the alliance partners to implement its future political strategy.

"We have taken some decisions in consultation with the alliance partners. We need the unity to implement them properly," Mr Delwar said speaking at a conference of Bangladesh Khelafot Mojlish at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the city.

Mr Delwar remained opposed to the Election Commission's (EC's) plan for local government polls before national elections.

He repeated his warning that the caretaker administration would have to bear all responsibilities if the EC's efforts for local body elections create unease in the country.

His statement came hours before Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda announced polls schedule for four city corporations and nine municipalities.

The BNP and its partners, including Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, are vehemently opposing the plans for local body polls. The alliance wants national polls before any local body election on the ground that the interim administration is constitutionally mandated only to hold national elections.

Khelafot Mojlish demanded release of all alliance leaders, lifting of the state of emergency, handing over power to elected representatives through a credible election, cancellation of the re-demarcation plan of parliamentary constituency and scrapping anti-Islamic provisions from the Women Development Policy.

Khelafot Mojlish Dhaka City Unit President Noman Mazhari chaired the discussion.

Meanwhile, Jatiyotabadi Mohila Dol separately demanded the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her sons Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko.

At a news conference at Khondoker Delwar's home in the city, Mohila Dol's Dhaka City Secretary Shirin Sultana said that they would continue to oppose the EC's plan for local body elections.

She demanded national polls by October 30.
