Delwar speaks of Khaleda's release as Hannan against sending her abroad

Sunday, 8 June 2008

BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain Sunday said the main target of his party leaders and workers is to free former Primer Minister Khaleda Zia while BNP chairperson's adviser Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah said his party's detained chief Khaleda Zia has no intention to go abroad for treatment under a reported government arrangement tied to conditions, reports UNB.

'We'll think about election and other issues only after her (Khaleda) release from jail,' Delwar said in a view-exchange meeting at his NAM flat with the leaders and workers of BNP from Bandarban district.

The BNP secretary general said a movement, if necessary, has to be waged for the quick release of the detained BNP chairperson and 'you need to get ready for that.'

Condemning the countrywide mass arrest, Delwar said this 'negative Action' of the government would only deepen the prevailing crisis. 'Such arrest cannot suppress an ideal movement,' he told the party workers.

However, Shah said Koko's medical treatment abroad is a different issue which should not be mixed up with Khaleda's. 'Send Koko abroad immediately for treatment as per recommendation of the medical board,' he said.

The BNP chairperson's adviser said Begum Zia herself recently disclosed her intention not to go outside the country for treatment.

Former Education Minister Dr Osman Farruq, who has sided with the reformist faction of the immediate-past ruling party, said it is better for Begum Zia to go abroad for better treatment. 'But it depends on her desire,' he said.
