Delwar urges UN to probe HR 'violations'

Monday, 23 June 2008

BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain has sought UN secretary general's intervention to inquire into how the spinal cord of former PM's son Tarique Rahman was broken as well as "human rights violations" in other cases in Bangladesh, reports UNB.

The BNP secretary general made the appeal addressing a meeting of the Naba Chetana Juba Forum at Hotel Grand Azad Sunday afternoon.

Delwar said they wanted government statement on how Tarique's spinal chord was broken but did not receive it.

He alleged that the interim government wants to run the country with the help of "foreign lackeys in the disguise of friends".

"The conspiracy against the country will have to be foiled through people's unity," said the BNP leader.

Delwar described elections for four city corporation and nine municipalities as test case by the government before going for holding upazila elections. He alleged that the government wants to elect people of its choice through 'stage-managed' elections.

Delwar further alleged that the government plans to form an electoral college with more than 600 chairmen and members of the local-government institutions to elect the country's President.
