CHITTAGONG, Oct 31 People in the port city have urged the government to curb the abnormal rise in prices of essential commodities such as rice, onion, pulses, 'ata', edible oil, powder milk, flour, etc., sources said.
The spiralling price level has seriously affected the normal life of the poor and people of middle-income groups here, sources added.
In view of acute onion crisis in Chaktai-Khatunganj market, the largest wholesale market of the country, price of the same has already surpassed all its previous records.
Within the gap of a week, onion price has registered a record rise at all the city markets.
Onion is now selling at Tk 60 per kg in different 'hats' and markets in the district.
Besides, prices of edible oil, flour, and powder milk are also on the rise.
On the plea of rising wholesale prices, the retailers have been realising extra profit from the innocent buyers, sources added.
Sources further said the aforesaid food items are being sold by the retailers at different rates in different kitchen markets.
Edible oil like soyabean is being sold at prices between Tk 85 and Tk 88 per kg in the kitchen markets. Almost all the vegetable items are selling over Tk 30 per kg.
In the situation, it has become difficult for the poor and the low-income groups to enter the fish markets due to their exorbitant prices demanded by the concerned sellers.
