Demarcate Turag, Balu boundaries in 15 days: HC

The High Court (HC) on Thursday ordered the government to establish pillars on the boundaries of the Turag and Balu rivers in two weeks after demarcating areas of the rivers in peak monsoon. It also asked the government to submit a progress report on compliance of the order before it by September 15. The Planning Secretary, the Environment Secretary, the Finance Secretary, the Water Resources Secretary, the BIWTA chairman, the director general (DG) of the Directorate of Land Survey, the DG of Department of Environment (DoE), and the deputy commissioners of Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj have been directed to execute the order. The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Md Khurshid Alam Sarker came up with the order following a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). The court also asked the government to stop illegal construction and remove structures on the Turag river in Kamarpara area of Tongi in Gazipur in seven days, according to a news agency.
