BEIJING, Aug 17 (AP): Elena Dementieva won the gold medal in women's singles Sunday at the Olympics by beating fellow Russian Dinara Safina 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
A flurry of double-faults doomed Safina. She flung her racket, broke it and smacked a ball into the stands, but the tantrums failed to help her serve. Dementieva also was steadier from the baseline.
When the No. 5-seeded Dementieva closed out the victory with a forehand winner, she collapsed to her knees, then walked to net and received a congratulatory hug from Safina.
