Democracy imperative for good governance: Muhith

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith Sunday said democracy is imperative for good governance, reports BSS from Sylhet.
"We consider democracy as the best system of governance," the Finance Minister made the comment while speaking at a function organised by Sylhet Association of Electronic Media Journalists Sunday.
The Finance Minister said the GDP growth did not cross four per cent before 1990 in the country. But the rate was between 4.5 per cent and five per cent on an average during the rules of democratic governments.
He said none other than the politicians can ensure freedom of the media. Freedom of the press was guaranteed in the country after 1990, he added.
With journalists association President Sangram Singh in the chair, it was addressed, among others, by Sylhet Press Club President Muktaris Un Noor, District Bar Association President Adv Dewan Golam Rabbani, District Awami League General Secretary Iftekhar Hossain Shamim, City Awami League General Secretary Adv Misbah Uddin Siraj, Sylhet Sadar Upazila Chairman Ashfaq Ahmed and journalists Al Azad and Shahabuddin Shahab.
Earlier, the Finance Minister attended a development coordination meeting of Sylhet Sadar Upazila with Upazila chairman Ashfaq Ahmed in the chair.
