Democracy without Khaleda, Hasina ‘a misconception’

Sunday, 8 July 2007

Awami League presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury Saturday said the practice of democracy sans two top leaders-Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia -- is a "misconception", as crosscurrents kept surfacing in the current process of political reforms, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters outside Sudha Sadan at noon, Matia, barred from meeting her leader, alleged that the government is speaking of democracy and secularism on the one hand and keeping the parties and two leaders confined on the other.
Referring to a Wall Street Journal report, a firebrand student leader of the 60s, said: "If political parties were weakened, it would help rise and strengthen extremism in the country."
Meanwhile, Advocate Shahara Khatun and Advocate Qamrul Islam today met AL chief Sheikh Hasina and discussed legal matters about the cases filed against her.
Visitors to the two beleaguered former prime ministers are restricted as a political clean-up drive has been in progress since a state of emergency was declared in the country in January amid a deadlock over the issues of general election, which was later cancelled.
