Dengue claims nine more lives, 2,617 more hospitalised

Dengue claimed nine more lives in the past 24 hours, including seven from Dhaka, taking the total fatalities to 1055, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday.
A total of 2,617 more cases of hospitalization, including 633 from Dhaka, took place in the 24 hours till 8:00am Thursday. The total dengue cases this year rose to 216,864. Of the total, 86,493 were from Dhaka, according to the DGHS daily update.
Of the total deaths, 674 were from Dhaka.
The total fatalities and cases of hospitalization due to the deadly disease caused by a mosquito-borne virus are highest in the last 23 years in the country.
Dengue appears to coincide with the rainy season from May to September and higher temperatures in Bangladesh, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The ever worsening dengue situation showed no sign of improvement with the numbers of deaths and cases growing.
Furthermore, the health authorities also continued to report a growing number of new cases outside Dhaka. Of the new cases of hospitalization, 1,984 were reported from outside Dhaka.
A total of 9,265 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 2,971 were from Dhaka.
Of the total admitted, 206,544 patients made recovery and returned home, including 82,848 from Dhaka with a recovery rate of 95 per cent on average.
Last year, 281 people died of dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
