Dengue death toll nears 400

Dhaka stable, outside worsening

Eleven more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Sunday morning, including 7 from Dhaka, raising the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 398 this year.
Meanwhile, 2,905 hospitalizations were also recorded the same period of time till 8:0 am Sunday across the country, including 1,042 from Dhaka,  according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The ever worsening dengue situation has yet to show any sign of improvement as the government continues to report a record number of new hospitalizations.
Cases outside Dhaka remained high, DGHS data said.
With the new casualties, the death tolls crossed 398 in dengue fever, including 307 from Dhaka.
Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
Meanwhile, the total dengue cases rose to 85,411. Of the total cases, 42,746 were from Dhaka, added DGHS.
A total of 9,733 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 4,335 were from Dhaka. Of the total admitted, 75,280 patients made recovery and returned home, and of them, 38,104 were from Dhaka.
Health Minister Zahid Maleque said that the dengue situation in Dhaka remained stable, however, the situation continued to worsen outside Dhaka.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at an event in Manikganj on the occasion of National Mourning Day on Sunday.
The health minister said that there were about 9,500 dengue patients admitted across the country. However, "we are trying our best to provide treatment. About 3,000 hospital beds have been made for patients in Dhaka city. Out of this, more than 2,000 patients are admitted and 5,000 beds have been made outside Dhaka. Hopefully, there will not be a shortage of beds," he added.
