FE Report
A visiting Danish government team Monday said it would provide US$200 million aid to Bangladesh in the current fiscal for improving good governance and undertaking some other development schemes, officials said.
The Danish delegation in a high-level consultation meeting with the government, however, expressed concern over the poor implementation status of development projects as it asked the government to improve its project execution capacity.
The government held the bilateral talks with the Denmark delegation, led by Martin Bille Hermann, head of the department for Asia under the foreign affairs ministry, at ERD in the city Monday.
Representatives from different key ministries and agencies of the government were present at the bilateral meeting, with ERD Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair.
The high-level bilateral consultation meeting was held after the last meeting in June 2006 in Dhaka.
Mr Bhuiyan said the delegation from the Nordic country also assured Bangladesh of Denmark's extended support to mitigate the impact of the climate change on the economy of the country.
"We had briefed the Danish delegation on the overall economic situation of the country and the reforms undertaken by the present government," he told the FE.
"We've described the government's under-preparation vision paper 2021, and shifting to five-year development plan from the existing poverty reduction strategy paper (PRSP)-based development approach. They are pleased with the government initiatives," he said.
The Nordic country pledged to continue its support to the government as a partner of development, the secretary said.
The European country had made commitment of around $200 million fund in the last financial year for development of different sectors including water, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, civil aviation and governance and human rights.
Danish Ambassador in Bangladesh Einer H Jensen was also present at the bilateral talks Monday.
The Danish delegation will meet the Prime Minister, the finance minister and other policy makers of the government during its Bangladesh visit up to November 5.
