Wednesday, 14 April 2010

Denmark assured Bangladesh of providing more assistance in power, energy, shipbuilding, and trade and business sectors for the socio-economic development of the country, reports UNB.
The assurance came from visiting Danish Development and Cooperation Minister Soren Pind when he called on Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at her office Tuesday.
They discussed wide range of bilateral relations, Danish investment in Bangladesh's private sector and expansion of trade and business between the two friendly countries.
Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad, who was present in the meeting, briefed the reporters.
The PM said that Bangladesh and Denmark currently enjoy excellent bilateral relations that are characterised by friendly feelings, commonality of views, economic cooperation and increasing bilateral trade.
The PM also informed the Danish minister that the present government is very much eager to strengthen the bilateral relations further as it considers Denmark as a dependable friend and development partner.
Referring to Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord signed during the previous Awami League government, Sheikh Hasina said her government is committed to implementing the CHT Peace Accord with a view to upholding political, social, cultural and economic rights of all citizens living in the CHT region.
She also said her previous government (1996-2001) was trying to implement the accord fully in line with the agreement. But, it could not implement the full accord during its last tenure before BNP led 4-party alliance government came to power in 2001.
Besides, she said the past BNP-Jamaat government did not take any initiatives to implement the accord.
The PM informed that land commission has so far been constituted in line with the accord to resolve the land related disputes in the hill region.
Hasina said her government has also launched different projects for the development of Chittagong Hill Tracts and sought more Danish support.
The PM firmly said that her government was affirmative to root out terrorists and militants at any cost. "The terrorists have no boundary and political ideology," she added.
Regarding poverty alleviation, she said the present Awami League government has taken various measures to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh by eradicating poverty and hunger.
The Danish Minister lauded Hasina for her able leadership and relentless efforts to turn Bangladesh into a technologically advanced country.
