Dense fog disrupts ferries
Tuesday, 7 January 2014
Ferry service on Mawa-Kewrakandi river route remained halted because of dense fog in Padma River on Tuesday. Sirajul Islam, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa ferry ghat (terminal), said ferry communications on the route remained suspended from 8:30 pm on Monday. Nine ferries with over 1,500 passengers and several hundred vehicles on board were forced to anchor at the mid point of the river to avoid accident, he added. The suspension of the ferry service caused huge traffic jam on both sides of the river ghat, causing immense suffering to the passengers. Ferry operation on the route remained suspended till 9:00am. For some days, ferry service on the important route has been vastly hampered as fog continued to envelope the entire area in the ongoing winter season, according to UNB.
