Friday, 11 December 2009

FE Report
International flight operations at Zia International Airport (ZIA) and ferry services on Mawa-Kawrakandi and Paturia-Doulatdia routes were disrupted for hours Thursday due to dense fog, officials said.
An official of ZIA told the FE that no flight landed at and took off from the airport from Wednesday midnight to 11:15am Thursday, as the foggy weather caused poor visibility.
A flight of Etihad Airlines coming from Abu Dhabi and a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines coming from Jeddah landed at Dum Dum Airport in Kolkata for fog, he said. An aircraft of Gulf Airlines first landed at ZIA after the disruption was over at about 11:15am which was supposed to land at 5:15am.
Meanwhile, BIWTC's control room said ferry services on Mawa-Kawrakandi and Paturia-Doulatdia routes were suspended for more than ten hours from 2:00am, as thick fog shrouded the Padma.
Duty officer of Kawrakandi ferry terminal said 10 ferries remained stranded in the Padma due to foggy weather from 1:00am.
Hundreds of vehicles also remained stranded at Paturia, Daulatdia, Kawrakandi and Kazirhat ferry terminals, causing immense sufferings to thousands of passengers.
Traders also faced a severe crisis with their goods being stranded at the terminals for hours due to bad weather, forcing them to look for alternatives.
A meteorology department officer said the foggy weather is a common phenomenon of the winter season and could continue for two or three more days.
