All for Purbachal housing plots
Deposed PM Hasina, British MP Tulip, others sued for graft
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 14 January 2025
Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's daughter British MP Tulip Siddiq and others have been sued for alleged irregularities in plot allocations under the Purbachal New Town Project.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed Monday three cases also naming Sheikh Rehana's son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and daughter Azmina Siddiq Rupanti, among others.
The ACC accused the individuals of violating sections 161, 163, 164, 409, 420, and 109 of the Penal Code (1860), as well as section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (1947). The allegations include undue influence, misuse of power, and irregularities in land allocation.
ACC Director-General (prevention) Akhter Hossain briefed the press later in the day about the filing of graft cases against the high-profile suspects. Among them, the plaintiff in Sheikh Rehana's case is ACC Deputy Director Md. Salahuddin, the plaintiff in Bobby's case is ACC Assistant Director SM Rashedul Hasan, and the plaintiff in Azmina's case is ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya.
ACC Deputy Director Md. Salahuddin filed against a total of 15 accused, including Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Tulip Siddiq, and officials such as Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar, Administrative Officer, Housing Ministry, Kazi Wasi Uddin, Additional Secretary, and several Rajuk officials.
The rest are former RAJUK Chairman's PA Md. Anisur Rahman Miah, former member (Estate and Land) Md. Khurshid Alam, member Tanmoy Das, (Development Control), former member Md. Nasir Uddin, member (Development) Major (Eng.) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury (Retd.), Assistant Director Mazharul Islam, Deputy Director Nayeb Ali Sharif and former director Md. Nurul Islam.
In another case, ACC assistant director SM Rashedul Hasan sued a total of 16 accused, including Sheikh Hasina, Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, Tulip Siddiq, and top government officials such as Secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker and Kazi Wasi Uddin.
Assistant Director of the anti-graft watchdog Afnan Jannat Keya filed a case against 16 accused with similar allegations against Azmina Siddiq Rupanti, Sheikh Hasina, Tulip Siddiq, and different officials.
The ACC claims to have "sufficient evidence that Tulip Siddiq influenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding the irregularities in plot allocation" in Purbachal.
Tulip, meanwhile, faces investigations involving gifted flat in London.
In October last year, following the changeover in state power, the High Court formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations of irregularities in Purbachal plot allocations, including those involving the Sheikh Hasina family members.
The court also directed the committee to examine alleged irregularities in Rajuk's land allocations during the 15-year tenure of the Awami League government.
On August 5, under pressure from a student-mass movement, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana fled the country, marking the end of the Awami League's facist rule.
