Detained BCC mayor sued in extortion case

An extortion case was filed against Barisal City Corporation (BCC) Mayor Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, also former lawmaker now in custody, with Tejgaon thana Wednesday, reports UNB.
Owner of construction firm Bisharad Trade International Zakir Hossain Nannu in his complaint said Sarwar demanded by phone Tk 61 million (6.10 crore) from him against awarding a contract on October 15, 2004.
He also threatened to cancel the contract and kill him if the money was not paid.
Nannu further said that being scared of his life, he along with BNP district president Akkas came to Dhaka and met with Sarwar in parliament hostel at about 8:00 pm the same day. Sarwar insisted on toll at the rate of 5.0 per cent of the contract money.
He gave Sarwar Tk 1.5 million through bank and also in cash at different times.
Joint forces arrested Sarwar on May 29 from his Gulshan residence in the city.
