Detained delinquents stage demonstration

Thursday, 10 September 2009

GAZIPUR, Sept 9 (UNB): The inmates of Kishore Unnayan Kendra at Tongi early Wednesday staged demonstrations and ransacked its valuables in protest against what the detained delinquents said 'supply of low-quality food and repression'.
Sources said almost all of the 150 inmates turned violent after Tarabi prayers on Tuesday night as one of them was beaten up by an official during the prayer session.
"At about 1am, the defiant juveniles staged demonstrations, gathered furniture and bed-sheets of the dormitory and set all these on fire," says an eyewitness account of the troubles given by locals.
During the demonstrations, they accused guard Yad Ali of beating them and demanded his withdrawal.
The protestors also threw utensils out of the dorm and tried to flee by scaling over the wall in a repeat of the delinquents' past attempts at jailbreak.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. They also held one inmate.
The situation at the centre, wherein juvenile offenders are housed for their correction, was peaceful till the writing of the report.
The inmates said they staged demonstrations as they were physically assaulted, meted out maltreatment and denied improved foods.
Abdur Rahman, Super of the Centre, however, denied outright the allegations.
Two of the inmates, Saiful Islam and Russel, were found injured inside the centre this (Wednesday) morning. However, it could not be known how they were injured.
Sitangshu Sen, Director General of Social Services Department, visited the centre this (Wednesday) morning and pacified the inmates. Dry foods were also served to the inmates during his visit.
Meanwhile, the government formed a three-member committee with Habibur Rahman, Director (institution) of the Social Services Department, as its chief for investigating the incident.
Convicted adolescents are brought in the centre considering their minor age. Sometimes, parents also send their bad boys to the centre apparently for correcting their character.
Another UNB report said Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque later in the day visited the Kishori Unnayan Kendra at Konabari and distributed rehabilitation materials among the detained girls.
