Thursday, 17 July 2014

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a 5-day remand for detained sub-inspector (SI) Jahidur Rahman of Mipur Police Station and his source Nasim Seikh each in connection with the custodial death of a man. Metropolitan magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman passed the order after DB inspector Nibaron Chandra Barman produced SI Jahid and Nasim before the court, seeking a 10-day remand for each. Sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam Khan filed a case against eight people, including Jahid and Nasim, with the Mipur Police Station over the death of Mahbubur Rahman Sujan, 35, in the police station following his arrest. SI Jahid nabbed Sujan in the city’s Shankar area on July 13. After the arrest, Sujan was allegedly tortured mercilessly in Mirpur Police Station. As Sujan fell sick, he was admitted to a local clinic and then shifted to Suhrawardy Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar where the doctor declared him dead, according to UNB.
