CHITTAGONG, Dec 15: Foreign shipping companies are now reluctant to send their vessels to this principal port of the country following repeated incidents of detaining foreign vessels at Chittagong Port (CP) during last one and a half months creating panic among the vessel owners.
It has obviously undermined the image of the country as the executives of the different shipping companies are reportedly treating the situation to be alarming.
They urged that necessary steps be taken to curb such on trend on an urgent basis. Otherwise, it is feared that it would become difficult to get necessary vessels to call at Chittagong Port, thus adversely affecting export and import trade of the country.
It is learnt, similar incident of detaining as many as eight vessels on different excuses took place at the port in the past. It led the foreign shipping companies even to contemplate for declaring Chittagong as an exclusion zone. Incident of similar nature is apprehended this time too.
Under the circumstances, incidents of sailors' leaving the vessels or even escaping with the vessels also took place.
