The real estate developers Tuesday announced at the inaugural ceremony of the Seventh REHAB Fair-2007 to rebuild a village in Barguna district, which has been worst affected by the cyclone, as a part of its social welfare activities.
A five-day long Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) Fair-2007 started at the city's Sheraton Hotel from Tuesday.
Housing and Public Works Ministry Adviser Mainul Hosein was scheduled to inaugurate the fair as the chief guest but as he was on a visit to the cyclone-hit areas, secretary of the ministry ASM Rashidul Hai inaugurated the fair.
In his inaugural speech, Rashidul Hai said the 'Urban Development Committee' is scheduled to submit its report on viability of constructing small dwelling units for the people of low-income groups after 15 days.
He said a teacher of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has been entrusted to prepare the report.
Rashidul Hai further said the registration fees of land and apartments might be re-fixed according to the demand of the developers as the issue was discussed at the advisory council meeting recently.
President of the REHAB Mukarram Husein Khan assured the meeting that they will raise funds to the tune of Tk 10 million from the fair and from members to help the cyclone affected people.
He said until the day, the real estate developers built a total number of 70,000 flats in the city over the last 16 years, which is very insignificant according to the demand of such dwelling units.
He demanded soft loan from the financial institutions at 5.0 per cent interest rate for the development of the real estate sector. Currently, the interest rates are more than 15 per cent and in some cases it is more than 16 per cent, he said.
REHAB general secretary Tanveerul Haque Probal said the government has increased the tax to Tk 250 per square metre from previous Tk 175 per square metre. The developers demanded the tax to be Tk 150 per square metre.
"This is one of the main reasons for higher prices of ready flats in the city," Probal said.
