Developing dredging industry
Monday, 9 May 2022
Bangladesh's shipbuilding sector has for long been doing well on the back of a surge in demand from domestic conglomerates. We are now building ships for foreign countries, too. With proper implementation and regulation of the new shipbuilding policy and safety measures, this sector could brighten up the economy of our country further.
As a riverine country, Bangladesh has a number of small and large rivers. However, many of them are not in a good shape. They regularly require dredging. So, it is time we paid attention to construction of dredgers in the country, where more than 300 rivers bring down about two billion tonnes of silt every year. It is a drain on foreign exchange to buy readymade dredgers from abroad when we have plenty of shipbuilding factories and cheaper labour available locally. Technical collaboration should not be a problem. After meeting local demand, we can also be able to export dredgers abroad.
