Developing the habit of fast reading

M A Islam
A good reading habit is a must for success in studies. And fast reading habit is a plus for anyone. A student with fast reading habit can always be ahead of others whose reading habit is rather average.
A habit of reading fast is attainable. This can be developed through practicing it regularly.
In his book Kibhabey bhalo chtro hoa jai'(how to be a good student) the writer Anwar Islam has shown that one can develop fast reading habit through regular practice of every month. The writer is suggesting to spend 5 minutes in the morning, 5 minutes in the noon and 5 minutes at night. Take a reading piece, read it for 4 minutes, close it and write your own note (summary) on this in one minute. Follow the same approach in every session.
The writer is suggesting in this way: keep your head fixed in the middle of the line. Your eyes will automatically move from left to right, your head will not move. When you will be reading the below lines, your head will follow down the middle of the lines. Just the way your eyes will move from left to right, your head will move from up to down.
Most of us read single words or single lines at a time. Those who are very fast read the whole paragraph at a stretch.
The writer has mentioned that Roosevelt could read three novels in a single day. He also used to travel a lot. An Irish professor can read 4200 words in every minute. When on off days, he reads six novels-which means he reads one novel in every two hours.
Those who read fast enjoy reading like visualising pictures. He or she can comprehend a paragraph just by reading it very fast and at one time.
How is it possible for a fast reader to read so fast? Anwar Islam explains: actually when eyes see, they do not see a single word, rather they see the whole line or the whole sentence. That is they do not see part of anything, rather the whole of it. Our mind also works in the same manner. Mind also understands the whole of anything. So if we are aware of our mind and eyes, we can be aware of reading capacity.
In order that we make tremendous results, there is no alternative to reading a very great deaL. I have a friend who works in public service in Bangladesh. He went to University of Birmingham to study public policy. He used to read 60-70 journals for a single assignment. He stood first among around 70 students from different countries.
It is only through fast reading habit we can read a lot of materials which can help us to excel in studies. Why not to begin the project of becoming a fast reader today and enjoy reading habit today?
