Dewan Farid Gazi passes away

HABIGANJ, Nov 19 (UNB) - Dewan Farid Gazi, ruling Awami League MP of Habiganj-1, passed away at Dhaka city's Square Hospital early this (Friday) morning.
The Awami League lawmaker breathed his last at 5:40 am. He was 86.
Veteran politician Dewan Farid Gazi was admitted to the hospital on October 14 for kidney dialysis with breathing problem.
Later, on November 12, he was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Sources said the deceased will be buried on the premises of Hazrat Shahjalal's Mazar after namaj-e-janaja at Sylhet Alia Madrassah tomorrow (Saturday).
Gazi was also an Awami League Advisory Council member and chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
Family sources said the veteran politician had been suffering from old age complications since long.
He was born at Devpara in Nabiganj upazila in 1924, and was elected lawmaker thrice in 1996, 2001 and in 2008 from Habiganj-1 constituency (Nabiganj and Bahubal upazilas).
He left behind five sons, two daughters and a host of relatives and well wishers to mourn his death.
Dewan Farid Gazi was a close aide of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and one of the main organisers of the War of Liberation in 1971.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Farid Gazi.
In a message of condolence, Zillur Rahman recalled the colourful political life of Farid Gazi and said he always raised his voice against all sorts of repression in the society.
"People of the country will remember his contribution to the struggle for independence and to strengthening of democratic process in the country," Zillur Rahman said recalling, "He was one of the closest friends of mine for his entire life."
In another condolence message, the Prime Minister said he (Gazi) made an invaluable contribution to all democratic movements including the great War of Liberation.
"In his death, the country has lost a dedicated leader," she said.
The Prime Minister conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Awami League General Secretary and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam also condoled the death of elderly politician Dewan Farid Gazi.
