NILPHAMARI, Oct 2: DFID funded large multipurpose fisheries project at Parbatipur is being neglected. The north west fishery extension project was established in 1987 on 50 acres of land not only for boosting fish production in the entire northern region but also for employment generation such as imparting training to poor village women for making fishing nets, building model fisheries village, imparting training to fish traders and fish farmers, providing internee course to fishery graduates of the universities and the students of zoology, pisciculture in farmland, cage culture in rivers and big canals.
DFID provided 200 million taka as loan to make the project successful. But all these main projects have been abandoned from the month of June 2007. As such the farm is producing brood fish, Bolda and Bagda shrimp, Tilapia fish fry and fish spawn and so on.
The discontinuation of the main project created frustration among the people of the area.
