FE Report
The UK's Department for International Development (DFID) has provided a total of 12 dory-type boats, which will be pressed into service for relief operations and mobile medicare facilities in Bangladesh's far-flung areas, battered by the recent Cyclone Sidr.
A chartered cargo plane carrying the sophisticated boats arrived Monday night at the Zia International Airport (ZIA) and later DFID Country Representative Chris Austin handed over the boats to senior officials of BRAC and Save the Children (UK), said a press release.
The government, BRAC and Save the Children will be given four boats each to help bolster their ongoing emergency relief operations. However, the four boats for the government will be handed over after discussion with the relevant authorities.
The UK aid is helping people in 13 severely affected districts, namely Borguna, Bagerhat, Barisal, Bhola, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Jhalokathi, Khulna, Madaripur, Potuakhali, Pirojpur, Satkhira and Shariatpur.
The UK government, one of the country's largest donors, has so far extended US$14 million or 7 million pounds in emergency aid to Bangladesh to help the Sidr-survivors.
