DGHS advisory on raw date juice intake

FE REPORT | Friday, 15 December 2023

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday issued a new warning against the sale and intake of raw date juice on serious health grounds.
Date juice is a prominent source of fatal Nipah virus and it usually breaks out in winter.
Raw date juice gets mixed with bat faeces or saliva that contains Nipah virus germs, according to the DGHS.
As a result, people can catch Nipah virus if they drink raw juice of date trees.
In addition to adults, the DGHS said, children and adolescents are getting infected with Nipah virus.
