Dhaka Abahani makes flying start

B League champions Dhaka Abahani Limited made a flying start in the final round of Citycell Federation Cup Football Tournament outplaying Jatrabari KC by 4-0 goals in the opening match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Wednesday, reports UNB.

Earlier, Bangladesh Football Federation president and legendary footballer Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin inaugurated the 16-team season's curtain raiser soccer meet at a simple ceremony.

Chief Executive Officer of meet sponsor Citycell Michael Seymour was also present as the special guest.

The popular sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit Abahani Limited dominated the first half by a solitary goal.

Abahani's fresh recruit from Ghana Andrews Mensah Pomeyie, in his first appearance, scored twice while national medio Mehedi Hasan Ujjal and national coloured striker Zahid Hasan Amely netted one for the crowd pulling Abahani Limited.

In the day's opener, Abahani played a dull and hopeless game during the first half with frustration of some 3,000 fans at the big bowl. They had to wait till 40th minute to score the first goal.

Abahani spoiled a penalty in the very 6th minute of the match as the spot kick of their national coloured striker Amely narrowly went outside. Abahani were awarded penalty when Jatrabari defender roughly tackled onrushing Abahani forward Amely in the danger zone.

Medio Ujjal opened the floodgate for Abahani in the 41st minute by a powerful angular shot from left flank utilizing a pass from former national captain Arif Khan Joy (1-0) with the cheers from small Abahani fans.

Amely doubled the Abahani margin in the 48th minute with a close range header, off a combined attack from Ghana duo Awudu Ibrahim and Andrews Pomeyie (2-0).
