Wednesday, 19 February 2014

India has yet to respond to Bangladesh's request to hold next round of talks aimed at expanding power sector cooperation, a senior Bangladesh source said on Tuesday, reports UNB.
The 7th meeting of Bangladesh-India Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting on power sector cooperation was due in January this year.
"Our Power Ministry had sent a proposal to Indian Power Ministry to hold the meeting on January 11-12. But we are yet to receive any reply from India," a senior official at the power ministry told the news agency.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
The 6th meeting was in January last year in Dhaka and the 5th one took place June last year in New Delhi.
The two sides are to hold meeting after every six month alternatively in Dhaka and New Delhi.
Now it's Dhaka's turn to host the 7th meeting.
At the last meeting in New Delhi, Bangladesh Power Secretary Monwar Islam and his Indian counterpart P Uma Sankar led their respective sides.
Bangladesh's power import from India and setting up of 1320 MW coal fired power plant in Rampal, Bangladesh featured in the talks.
The meeting expedited Bangladesh's import of 500 MW of electricity from India.
Official sources said the next talks will focus on joint venture coal-fired power plant in Rampal.
Bangladesh also seeks to discuss joint venture power plants in eastern part of India and also import of more electricity from the neighbouring country, particularly at least 100 MW from Tripura's Palatana Power Plant.
