Dhaka, Chittagong wholesale drug traders strike to protest arrests

Drug stores at the city's major wholesale market at Mitford closed their shutters in protest against the arrest of their fellow traders in the port city of Chittagong.
The drug stores at Hazari Lane, the leading drug wholesale market in the port city also remained closed on the day demanding immediate release of their fellow traders arrested
Thursday.
The arrested persons were Raju Das, Tipu Chowdhury and Rana Biswas of Popular Pharmacy, a large wholesale store at Hazari Lane in Chittagong.
Drug stores totaling around 3000 in the two major wholesale markets enforced the strike between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on the day.
Earlier on Thursday, elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive at a Hazari Lane drug store arrested the three drug sellers for their alleged involvement in the sale of contraband medicine.
Drug sellers at Mitford area told the FE that they would enforce more tougher programmes unless the arrestees were released immediately.
They alleged that the RAB personnel had looted valuables medicines in the disguise of drive against the contraband medicines.
Monir Hossain, Bangladesh Chemist and Drug Association deputy general secretary said the government has not provided them any proper directive about which drug is legal and which is illegal.
