Dhaka-Colombia trade ties stressed

Ambassador of Colombia in Bangladesh Juan Alfredo Pinto Saavedra has stressed the need for establishing bilateral trade relation between Bangladesh and Colombia.
The envoy made the observation when he called on President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Zafar Osman at the latter's office in the city recently to discuss bilateral trade and business issues.
Appreciating the role of DCCI in supporting SMEs (small and medium enterprises), the ambassador said even though, presently, the bilateral trade ties between the two countries is far from substantial, but he is optimistic that it will grow in future if two countries make sincere efforts for product diversification and attracting FDI (foreign direct investment) in different sectors.
He sought opportunities for establishing a common forum of SMEs and signing an MoU (memorandum of understanding) for boosting trade and commerce between the two countries.
He promised to send his counsellor and secretary soon to discuss and identify areas of business and investment cooperation between the two countries.
Zafar Osman thanked the ambassador for meeting with the DCCI and his earnest interest in exploring possibilities to import products from Bangladesh like RMG (readymade garments), textile fabrics, tea, jute and other items.
Regarding PPP (private-public partnership) projects (PPP) Columbia can help Bangladesh, he added.
Responding to the traffic congestion in Bangladesh, the Colombian envoy informed the DCCI about one of their good projects titled TRANSMILENIO.
He also gave a brief on it and expressed desire to cooperate with Bangladesh in this connection.
Senior Vice President of DCCI MS Shekil Chowdhury sought foreign direct Investment (FDI) from Colombia in the country's power sector. He suggested for establishing Columbian embassy or consulate in Bangladesh.
