Dhaka condemns bombing attempt on Glasgow Airport

Tuesday, 3 July 2007

Bangladesh has condemned the Saturday's bombing attempt on Glasgow Airport in Scotland terming it as an act of cowardice and made a call for peace, calm and stability in every society, reports UNB.
Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury Sunday described the attempt an "act of cowardice which all of us condemn." He said, "All the members of the British-Bangladeshi community are deeply law-abiding, and I know they join me in the hope and call for peace, calm and stability in this, and every other society."
The Foreign Adviser made the comments when he passed through London Sunday on way to Geneva where he is leading the Bangladesh delegation to a high-level conference of ministers of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on July 2-5.
"The Bangladesh Govern-ment looks forward to working very closely with the new Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his team. Already Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed had sent a message to the Prime Minister as I also have to Foreign Secretary David Miliband, underscoring those sentiments," he said.
He added, "As is evident, there are difficult times, and it is absolutely essential that our two countries, who share such common values, much coordinate over global activities to ensure a more secure, peaceful and happy world."
Commenting on the new Cabinet, Iftekhar Chowdhury said, he sees it as a team of talents, which is good for the UK, and good for the world.
He hoped that the new Cabinet would accord appropriate focus on poverty-alleviation and development, as well as on the United Nations, as is demonstrated by the inclusion of personalities like Lord Malloch-Brown in responsible positions.
At the Geneva conference, Iftekhar Chowdhury is expected to present a report on the success-story of Bangladesh in meeting the target of poverty alleviation and hunger reduction.
