Dhaka court sends Haji Salim to jail

FE REPORT | Monday, 23 May 2022

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Haji Mohammad Salim, a ruling party lawmaker from Dhaka-7 constituency who had been earlier sentenced to 10 years in prison in a corruption case, to jail after he surrendered before it.
Judge Shahidul Islam of the Special Judge's Court-7 in Dhaka passed the order after rejecting his bail petition in the case.
Lawyers of Haji Salim prayed to the court for providing him with proper treatment and first-class division facilities in jail.
The judge asked the jail authorities to give him facilities as per jail code.
Lawyers Sri Pran Nath and Sayed Ahmed Raja attended the hearing on behalf of Haji Salim while Mosharraf Hossain Kazal represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Haji Salim came on the court premises at 3.00 pm to surrender in the case.
A large number of his followers gathered there centering the surrender and security was tightened on the court premises on that account.
The High Court on March 9, 2021 upheld 10 years' imprisonment given to Haji Salim in the case filed for possessing wealth worth Tk269.2 million beyond his known sources of income. The court also upheld the fine of Tk 1.0 million imposed by the lower court.
However, the ruling party man was acquitted of three years' imprisonment given by a special court on charge of concealing information of his assets in the same case.
