AGARTALA (Tripura), Jan 12 (UNB): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday said Bangladesh and India could move ahead in improving the condition of the two peoples if both work together leaving the past behind.
"Though unfortunate, I like to say that lack of trust and misunderstanding damaged the relations between our two countries time and again," she said.
"Destiny of our two peoples lies in our mutual multifaceted relations," Sheikh Hasina said at a civic reception organised by the Agartala Municipal Council at the Assam Rifles ground.
Agartala Municipal Council hosted the reception in honour of Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at the Assam Rifles ground.
Chaired by Tripura Governor DY Patil, the reception was addressed by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
Prafullajit Sinha, chairperson of Agartala Municipal Council, gave the welcome address while the Tripura Chief Secretary offered the vote of thanks.
The reception started with songs of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore and Bangladesh national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Thousands of people gathered at the reception venue to have a glimpse of Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina said her government and the people of Bangladesh are committed to establishing mutually beneficial relations with India.
The PM said a nice opportunity has been created to develop mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and India. "We will definitely have to utilise the opportunity," sheikh Hasina also said.
Hasina said during her visit to India in 2010, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and she reached consensus on cooperation on matters relating to security, land border, communications, power, trade, water resources management, education and culture.
She said both governments emphasised implementing the decisions agreed upon during her visit to New Delhi and Manmohan's return visit to Dhaka to derive benefit for the people of the two countries.
The PM said the transportation of cargos to Palatana power plant in Tripura through Ashuganj has already been completed. Officials of the two countries are now working to remove existing difficulties detected through this trial run of transports.
She also mentioned that officials of the two countries are working to prepare a draft agreement to set up a railroad on Akhaura-Ashuganj route and construct a bridge over the Feni River.
Hasina said the government has taken administrative steps to open the Sabrom-Ramgarh land port and set up four 'border haats' on Bangladesh-Tripura border.
"If the initiatives are implemented, these will play an important role in uplifting the socio-economic situation of the entire region, apart from Bangladesh and Tripura."
She said Bangladesh is willing to procure electricity from Tripura to meet the country's growing demand.
"We are interested to procure electricity from Tripura or invest in the power generation in Tripura to meet our demand," she said.
Mentioning that an ideal situation for investment is prevailing in Bangladesh, Hasina urged the businessmen and industrialists of Tripura to invest in Bangladesh, especially in the power generation sector as the country needs a large quantity of power to meet its own demand.
