FE REPORT | Thursday, 27 July 2023
The 19.73-km Dhaka Elevated Expressway is set to open partially to traffic soon.
The expressway stretching from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) to Farmgate via Kuril, Banani, Mohakhali and Tejgaon awaits inauguration, reads a press release issued on Tuesday.
Dr Md Mushfiqur Rahman, CEO of the PPP Authority, inspected the project site from Airport to Farmgate via Kuril the same day to assess its progress.
Officials from Bangladesh Bridges Authority, Ministry of Finance, PPP Authority, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Ltd, China Shandong International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group, and Sinohydro Corporation Ltd accompanied him.
The 11-kilometre expressway, equipped with 15 ramps, will facilitate easy entry and exit for vehicles, helping them avoid traffic-choked crossings and congested roads.
The project is being implemented under the public-private partnership [PPP] model with a foreign investment of $1.3 billion.
The entire expressway covers areas from HSIA to Kutubkhali on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, touching 28 city points through ramps to provide entry and exit for city and highway traffic.
The project is scheduled for completion by June 2024.
Out of all 28 ramps, one of the major exit ramps is being built at South Kawla. It will end near the airport's third terminal, which is currently under construction.
If anyone enters the expressway from Mohakhali or Banani area, they will be able to head towards Airport or Gazipur using this ramp easily. They can easily enter the expressway using the entry ramp close to the third terminal.
Thirteen more ramps are also being built-two entry ramps and one exit ramp at Kuril, two exit ramps and one entry ramp at Banani, one entry ramp at Chairmanbari, two exit ramps and one entry ramp at Mohakhali, two entry ramps at Bijoysarani and one exit ramp at Farmgate.
Once elevated expressways are operational, people from the country's northern, western and south-western regions will be able to travel from one side to another without having to enter city streets.
The expressway marks a milestone in Dhaka city's development, promising a prosperous future for its residents.
