Dhaka hails Baroness Pola\\\'s statement
Saturday, 21 June 2014
Bangladesh has welcomed the statement made recently by Baroness Pola Uddin in the House of Lords wherein she referred to the case of 0.3 million Bengali victims of sexual violence during the War of Liberation in 1971, reports UNB.
She also raised the question as to whether there is any room to create a constructive provision of support and resources for the survivors of past atrocities and conflicts.
Pola Uddin was speaking with reference to the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict held in London from June 10 to June 13, said a Foreign Ministry media release Thursday night.
In reply, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, acknowledged this as an important issue and recalled Baroness Uddin's campaign in this regard.
She said supporting the victims of sexual violence was a priority for the Summit and assured that the commitment made at the Global Summit included supporting victims of the past.
Bangladesh signed the Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and, particularly in this backdrop, supported the United Kingdom's Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).
The importance of the issue for the government of Bangladesh is reflected by the fact that Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali began his intervention at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict by paying tribute to those victims.
