Dhaka, Kabul for expanding bilateral cooperation

NEW YORK, Sept 25 (UNB): Bangladesh and Afghanistan have decided to set up a bilateral mechanism between the two foreign ministers to follow up bilateral cooperation with a view to expanding and deepening it.
The decision came when Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai had bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at UN Headquarters here Monday.
During the meeting, President Karzai praised Bangladesh's contribution towards Afghanistan's rebuilding works.
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin expressed the hope that abducted Bangladeshi BRAC worker Nurul Islam would be released soon by the kidnappers.
He thanked the Afghan authorities for the efforts they have been making in rescuing the abducted BRAC worker.
Responding to the Chief Adviser, President Karzai assured him that the Afghan government would do everything possible in this regard.
Appreciating the work of Bangladeshi people in his country, Karzai expressed the hope that Bangladeshis would continue their good work in Afghanistan.
He said they would welcome Bangladeshi expertise in different development and administrative sectors, including services of auditors, civil servants and computer specialists.
Karzai specially lauded the reform measures being taken by the Fakhruddin government saying that he had been following these closely and found those "truly praiseworthy."
Fakhruddin assured President Karzai that Bangladesh would share all her experiences with Afghanistan.
"I have a special fondness for Bangladesh, and I promise I will visit you soon," the Afghan President was quoted as saying to the Chief Adviser.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder and Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Ismat Jahan were present from Bangladesh side during the meeting while Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta and other high officials were present from Afghan side.
Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim, who was present at the meeting, briefed newsmen about the outcome of the bilateral meeting.
