Dhaka keen to resolve pending issues with Myanmar thru' dialogue

Friday, 27 June 2008

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Thursday said Bangladesh would like to resolve any pending issue with Myanmar through discussion, particularly stating that the issues of repatriation of the Rohingya refugees and maritime border demarcation could be amicably solved through talks.

The head of the caretaker government made the remark when outgoing Myanmar Ambassador in Dhaka U Nyan Lynn made a farewell call on him at the CA's office, reports UNB.

Emphasising exchange of high-level visits between the two neighbouring countries, the CA said he was looking forward to the visit of Vice-chairman of State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Maung Aye to Bangladesh.

The visit was tentatively scheduled to take place last year but, for unavoidable circumstances, was postponed, according to an official.

The ambassador apprised the CA that the visit of Senior General Maung Aye could most likely take place by the end of this year.

The CA said Bangladesh was interested in early conclusion of farming agreement with Myanmar for cooperation in the field of agriculture for using its arable land.

"There might as well be cooperation between the two countries in some other areas, including direct banking arrangement and enriching shipping link for enhancing trade," he told the envoy.

On road link, he said Bangladesh was keen to open the trans-border land route through Myanmar up to China, which would help the people in the region.

The envoy said road link would facilitate trade and people-to-people contact as well. He also said Myanmar had indicated the tripartite road link to China.
